The UK pool of good used Euro pallets is under pressure
Second hand Euro pallets are one of the most sought-after recycled pallet products in the UK. The strongest demand is often for cleaner Grade A stock: pallets that have already circulated but still present well enough for customers that want a smart, consistent used pallet.
The challenge is that this pool does not replenish itself. Every additional trip adds wear, staining, knocks and handling marks. A pallet that starts life as new may become Grade A used stock after early cycles, then move into Grade B as appearance and wear increase. Eventually, after repair opportunities are exhausted, the timber is recovered or recycled.
That does not mean Grade B stock is poor. It means the appearance standard is different. For many industrial movements, a sound Grade B pallet can still be perfectly suitable where cosmetic presentation is less important than function.
Grade A Euro Pallets
Grade A used Euro pallets are typically cleaner and more consistent in appearance, with less staining and weathering than lower grades. They are often chosen where presentation matters, including finished goods, cleaner warehouse environments and customer-facing supply chains.
Availability can be tight because every use moves good stock further through its life cycle.
Grade B Euro Pallets
Grade B pallets show more signs of previous use, such as darker timber, handling marks and general wear. They remain useful where the key requirement is a sound pallet rather than a near-new appearance.
For cost-sensitive internal or industrial use, Grade B can be a practical option when the specification is suitable.

Why the Grade A pool shrinks
Think of the used Euro pallet market as a moving pool rather than a warehouse of identical products. New pallets enter circulation. After use they may still be visually clean enough to be sold as Grade A. With repeated handling, transport, moisture exposure and storage, a proportion naturally moves into Grade B. Some are repaired and continue working; others eventually leave the usable pool.
When a major user changes purchasing strategy from new stock to used Grade A stock, demand is transferred into a supply pool that is already shrinking through normal wear. That is why it can become difficult to guarantee very large quantities of top-grade used Euros without planning.
For customers using large volumes, the sensible approach is often to agree an acceptable grade range and maintain a new-pallet fallback rather than rely on one recycled grade being endlessly available.
Heat-treated second hand Euro pallets
Where suitable stock is available, used wooden pallets can be heat treated for ISPM 15 requirements. Heat treatment and moisture reduction are separate processes, so if a customer also has a specific moisture-content requirement that should be stated separately.
